Flogging Molly to Bring Celtic Romp to Penn State on 3/3

The boisterous Celtic-punk band will play a sold out show at Penn State’s Alumni Hall on March 3rd, marking an early celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. Flogging Molly is currently on their 6th Annual Green 17 Tour with Scythian, a band that manages to sound simultaneously Irish, Eastern European, and even a little bluegrass at times.

Flogging Molly is best known for their melange of fiddles, banjos, and traditional Irish instruments accompanying punk rock guitar riffs and singer Dave King’s gravelly vocals. The band, which formed in Los Angeles in 1997, got its name from its first venue: a bar called Molly Malone. Since then, they’ve released four major albums and have regularly performed on Warped Tour.

The band’s music, which they claim is influenced by The Dubliners and Johnny Cash, is striking and fast-paced, bursting with energy behind flying fiddle melodies and rapid drumbeats. They combine the long tradition of Irish patriotism and rebellion with spunky punk rock, producing songs that bridge the gap between an Irish past and the modern world. Songs like “Drunken Lullabies” and “Rebels of the Sacred Heart” exhibit this dual nature particularly well, as does their new single “Punch Drunk Grinning Soul” (which you can download for free from their website).

Flogging Molly will start off the celebrations in the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day with what will no doubt be a memorable night. Get your green on!
