Johnny Winter at the State Theatre
Live Music: Jazz & Blues
Thursday September 25, 2014
- 11:59 pm
It has been seven years since Johnny Winter filled The State Theatre and thrilled Central Pennsylvania blues fans with his inimitable take on the genre in such an intimate setting. We are pleased to announce his overdue return to State College on September 25, 2014, at 8 PM.
Voted one of the top 100 guitarists of all time in Rolling Stone Magazine, Johnny Winter is a guitar hero without equal. Signing with Columbia Records in 1969, he quickly established his signature interpretation of classic blues combined with high-energy Texas funk just as British blues-rock interpreters like Clapton and Page were reintroducing American audiences to this quintessential American music. He has been a torch-bearer for original masters like Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker, and an inspiration to a whole generation of blues-based rockers like the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Today Johnny Winter is enjoying an unparalleled resurgence performing to sold-out shows worldwide even after a long life full of honors and accomplishments such as a triumphant
appearance at the Crossroads Festival with Derek Trucks, Buddy Guy, and Eric Clapton, immortalized on an Emmy-award-winning DVD. The list of awards, career-spanning reissues of his classic recordings, and featured guest performances with a who’s who of his peers in blues and rock continues to grow. As local fans are soon to discover, Johnny Winter is back and better than ever.
Tickets will be priced at $30 and $35 and are available from the Theatre’s box office (814-272-0606) or website. Complete concert information can be found at: http://thestatetheatre.org/johnny-winter/.
