Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings Review

Last Friday night the “Daptone super-soul revue” was in State College for one reason and one reason only: to move and groove and turn the State Theatre upside down with some funky soul vibrations.The Dap-Kings opened up on stage without the star of the show, warming up the crowd and sending a “mellowmatic mood” straight from their instruments out into the audience.  Soon, with just a little bit of ado, the black-dressed diva appeared before the crowd donning a metallic scarf and an attitude that lifted even the most introverted attendant out of their seat.  “Not Gonna Cry” was the first song she belted, followed by “How Do I Let a Good Man Down.”

Brandi Carlile Rocks the State Theatre

Members of the audience were tapping their heels, clapping their hands, and even harmonizing along with Brandi Carlile while she performed last Tuesday night at the State Theatre.  And I don’t think it was just because some of them were drinking.

Highlights of Friday’s classical music on WPSU-FM include the Guitar Concerto No. 1 by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco;  “In the Steppes of Central Asia” by Alexander Borodin; the double violin concerto by J.S. Bach; and Tchaikovsky’s “Capriccio italien”.  Join us for the music from 9:00am to 3:00pm Friday on WPSU-FM.

Motion City Soundtrack at Penn State Jan. 30

On Saturday night, the Student Programming Association (SPA) will host Motion City Soundtrack with Set Your Goals, a pop-punk band from San Francisco with melodic hardcore influences. This will be the second week in a row for concerts held in the HUB on the Penn State campus - a promising trend.

We Are…Scientists Rock Penn State

Sparkling clear guitar riffs and driving drumbeats resounded through Penn State’s Alumni Hall on Friday night as students and local residents sought a refuge from the cold and listless January night. Inside, the atmosphere was decidedly warm - the perfect tonic of camaraderie and music.

David Bromberg and Jorma Kaukonen at the State Theatre-Jan 27th

As disciples of the late Rev. Gary Davis, Jorma Kaukonen and David Bromberg share the same major musical influence.  Born in Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, respectively, each picked up on Davis’ gospel/blues songs and finger-picking guitar at an early age.  While Jorma learned of the music through friends, David was actually taught by him directly, along with several other prominent players.  Both Jorma and David seemed destined to head down similar career paths without either necessarily bound for the mainstream.

We are Scientists to Play Penn State: Jan 22nd

Brooklyn-based alternative rock group We Are Scientists will play a free show at the HUB on January 22, accompanied by local bands British Phil and The Exclusive Document. The event is hosted by SOMA, Students Organizing the Multiple Arts.

Energy and passion, these are some of the attributes that Sharon Jones brings to the table.  An engaging performer and singer, she puts herself out there with everything she’s got.  Think of her as a late-blooming, female version of James Brown.

Friday’s classical music on WPSU-FM will include pianist Van Cliburn playing music by Frederic Chopin, as we observe the composer’s bicentennial this year.  We’ll also hear Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 played with period instruments by the London Classical Players, and music by American composers William Grant Still and Alan Hovhaness.  Join us for that and much more from 9:00am to 3:00pm Friday on WPSU-FM.
