Political Profiles and a Still Controversial Medical Procedure

Radio Feature: Senate Primary Race Part 1 – Tuesday at 6:50am and 8:50am during Morning Edition – Recent polls give Arlen Specter the edge in the upcoming Democratic primary for PA’s U.S. Senate seat.  WITF’s Scott Detrow recently shadowed the 5-time incumbent for a day in DC and filed this impression.

TV: AMERICAN EXPERIENCE – Monday, 9pm – “The Lobotomist” – An intriguing look at what the New York Times once dubbed “surgery of the soul”—-the lobotomy—-and its champion, Dr. Walter J. Freeman, who saw the procedure as a chance to leave his mark on medicine.

TV: GREAT PERFORMANCES AT THE MET – Wednesday, 9pm – “Les Contes d’Hoffmann” – A production of Jacques Offenbach’s opera “Les Contes d’Hoffmann,” about the life, loves and psychological manifestations of the German Romantic author E.T.A. TV: CONVERSATIONS FROM PENN STATE – Thursday, 9pm – “Randall Robinson” – Randall Robinson is an internationally recognized activist and acclaimed author. Listen to him discuss his advocacy on behalf of Africa and the Caribbean. Learn about his contributions to such pivotal events as the end of apartheid in South Africa and the restoration of Haiti’s first democratically elected government.

TV: PASSING POSTON – Sunday, 6pm – In this emotional documentary, filmmakers James Nubile and Joe Fox examine an internment camp that detained Japanese-Americans during World War II and explore its impact on the former internees.

TV: ESCAPE TO DREAMLAND: THE STORY OF THE TAMIAMI TRAIL – Sunday, 7pm – The story of Florida’s historic Tamiami Trail, (US 41) and how the failed plans for a vast Empire of the Everglades spawned a new twist on the American dream.
