Blue in the FACE Holiday Concert Review

Blue in the FACE’s winter concert was an unforgettable experience. After watching the show, it was easy to see how this newly established a’cappella group acquired its name. From start to finish, the twenty-four talented members of Blue in the FACE sang their hearts out until they were literally blue in the face.

The concert consisted of a medley of musical styles that would please any music lover, including Broadway, jazz, rock and roll, contemporary, and holiday songs. Although it may have sounded like there was musical accompaniment, all of the beats and rhythms came from the singers alone. Ravi Shah, a sophomore majoring in Bioengineering, created most of these sounds as the vocal percussionist of the group. His beats and stamina amazed all in attendance.

Although each song FACE sang was superbly executed, there were some headliners of the night. The opening song “Seasons of Love” from the musical Rent was a crowd favorite. The song showcased FACE’s attention to detail with beautiful harmonies, crescendos, and array of vocal ranges. Sarah Baumgarten, a freshman majoring in Vocal Performance, showed off her Soprano-1 pipes by hitting a high C, a note that not many singers can reach.

FACE also showed off their jazzy side by putting a fun twist on the holiday classic “Carol of the Bells.”

Out of all the songs performed, the finale of “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey and “Africa” by Toto knocked the ball out of the park. FACE sang with high energy and enthusiasm, bringing a smile to every audience members’ face.

It was unbelievable that this was only Blue in the FACE’s second official concert of the year. The group was talented, professional, and fun, three qualities that not all vocal groups have. After watching Blue in the FACE’s performance, I would highly suggest going to the group’s next event. I guarantee you’ll have a memorable experience.
