Sounds of Summer - Generationals and Fiddlercrabs 4/19
Posted by Charlee Redman on 04/18 at 11:44 PM
Roustabout! and SOMA are bringing a little New Orleans to State College on Monday April 19th. The local surf-rocking Fiddlercrabs will perform with Louisiana quartet Generationals at Chronic Town. The doors will open at 9pm to those over 18 and the show will start at 9:30pm.
The Fiddlercrabs, who I’ve blogged about before, are a student band from Penn State. Last week at Arts Crawl they appeared with their signature reverb-heavy instrumental surf music, playing to a sizable crowd crammed into a classroom in the Visual Arts Building. This time, they’ll have a rather different venue.
The stylistic throwbacks and sunny-summer-drive feeling of the Generationals’ music make the young New Orleans band noteworthy. Since forming in 2008, the Generationals have released a successful first album, Con Law, and signed with independent label Park the Van Records.
Their songs have a refined melodic sensibility, exuding energy with the bright horns on “Nobody Could Change Your Mind” and the occasional venture into sleek funky bass lines (see “Bobby Beale” on their Myspace). One of their most memorable creations, “When They Fight, They Fight,” tells a tale of spurned love through succulent Motown vocals and light, treble guitar.
Come on out to hear the sounds of summer, approaching slowly but surely (and really, what else is there to do on a Monday night?)
