Summer Song Feature: Good Time
Posted by Karen Marchuska on 06/29 at 10:19 AM
What do you get when you put together two one-hit wonders who have spent a combined 48 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart? Most likely a new summer smash, in the form of “Good Time” by Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen.
Released to Owl City’s Soundcloud on Wednesday June 21st, “Good Time” was written by Adam Young (Owl City) along with Matthew Thiessen of the Christian rock band Relient K. It only makes sense that he asked the current queen of the charts, Carly Rae Jepsen to join him on the track. The song displays Jepsen’s complete vocal range as she sings over Owl City’s signature synth beats, and she brilliantly delivers the bridge. This collaboration can only extend Jepsen’s time on top and may even oust her own song from number 1 in due time, as it’s just as catchy.
Despite the piece of pop brilliance that this song is musically, it is sadly a step back for Owl City from a lyrical stand-point. The lyrics are all that you would expect from a top 40 song, but they are not up to his usual caliber of creative writing. He’s gone from “why do I tire of counting sheep, when I’m far too tired to fall asleep” in “Fireflies,” to predictable party fare with lines like “hands up if you’re down to get down tonight” and “slept in all my clothes like I didn’t care.” Then there is “we don’t even have to try, it’s always a good time.” Yeah, it really sounds like he;s not trying.
Nevertheless, the music is strong enough where, once this song gets released to radio, it will definitely become the new summer hit. Though Owl City may be losing some fans that fell in love with his creatively wacky lyrics, this party all night song will be blaring from speakers for the next 3 months.
