Third Eye Blind: Review

Third Eye Blind’s sold out concert at the State Theatre Monday night left fans craving more after their spectacular performance. The band never failed to keep fans on their toes. With a nearly blinding light show as their backdrop, the musicians of Third Eye Blind opened the show by playing rhythms that showcased each of their musical talents. Adding to the intensity of the moment was a tribal dancer on top of an elevated platform, throwing out glow sticks to the enthralled crowd.

Some lesser-known songs of the night included the hardcore “Graduate,” the uplifting “Can You Take Me,” and the soul-binding “Slow Motion.”  The band avoided playing their more popular hits, showcasing their diverse sound rarely heard on the radio. Their music ranged from hardcore and powerful beats to soft and eccentric tones.

The performance was intensified by spectacular solos by drummer Brad Hargreaves and guitarist Tony Fredianelli. Two songs that got a strong reaction from the crowd were “Bonfire,” a song off the band’s new album “Ursa Major,” and the classic “Motorcycle Drive By” from the band’s first self-titled album.  Fans sang along with other songs fom “Ursa Major” as well, showing that their newest material remains popular with the fans.

Lead singer Stephan Jenkins enjoyed playing to the audience. Constantly involving the crowd in one way or another, Jenkins expressed how “terribly excited” he was to be at the “smallest show” on their entire two-year tour. “Your Econ class is bigger than this,” exclaimed Jenkins. 

The band surprised the audience with two separate encores. The first time the show came to an end, the audience started chanting, “We are…Penn State!” until the band ran back on stage. When the band left for the second time, the audience desperately chanted, “One more song!” in hopes for one last moment with the band. Jenkins ran onto the stage once again and passionately stated to the audience, “This is the reason why we made Ursa Major. Thank you!”

The energy in the State Theatre Monday night was hard to ignore.  Those lucky enough to get a ticket were rewarded with a memorable show.
