African American Genealogy

Community Events

In February we will look at African American Genealogy in general, starting in Jamestown and looking at groups of documented individuals set free before 1800 in Virginia. We will identify differences and similarities between states when looking for records. Finally, we will apply what demographic information we know to the population in Centre County Pennsylvania connecting some of our Central Pennsylvania Families to some of the most prominent figures in African American History. African American Genealogy gives us a stereogram (Magic Eye®) view of our traditional history. If we relax our focus and slowly distance ourselves from the traditional knowledge a new image is visible which incorporates the original image as background making what appeared as flat now 3 dimensional. Nothing we see changes but the view is very different. Any new view of history holds clues for all of us to apply in our individual searches in genealogy. The more we know about whom we are searching for the easier it may be to break through barriers. We hope you can join us!
