Jennifer Greenhill, assistant professor of art history at the University of Illinois, considers the communicative challenges of visual humor during the mid-nineteenth century and investigates the role played by text in the satirical oil paintings of artists like John Harrison Mills, David Gilmour Blythe, and Winslow Homer.
