State College Area Municipal Band Veterans Day Concert Sun., Nov. 8, 3:00, SCAHS South Auditorium The State College Area Municipal Band begins its indoor season with the annual Veterans Day Concert Sunday, November 8 at 3:00 in the SCAHS South Auditorium. Conductor Ned C. Deihl, Penn State Director of Bands Emeritus, plans to honor veterans of all the branches of the US Armed Forces. The concert showcases American music including "American Pageant," arranged by Thomas Knox (chief arranger for the US Marine Band), and "An American Elegy." The band will perform "Copland Portrait," a medley of songs by the man considered by many to be America's greatest composer. Familiar tunes in the Copland medley are "Fanfare for the Common Man" and "Hoedown" from Rodeo. Several outstanding marches included on the program "Americans We" by Fillmore and "The Vanished Army" by Alford. A popular number in past concerts has been "Homefront: Memories of World War II." Two clarinet soloists share the spotlight in "Perpetual Motion," a virtuoso solo of continuous fast technique in which the two soloists alternate. Soloists are Brandy Davis, graduate of Penn State's School of Music, and Adrienne Hodges, Eastman School of Music graduate who recently successfully auditioned for a coveted clarinetist position in the US Army Field Band. The program concludes with the "Salute to the Armed Forces" during which all veterans from each branch of the service are asked to stand as the band plays "their song." Always a rousing finale! The concert is free but contributions are most welcome at the door.
