Béla Fleck • The Africa Project Collaborations with Amazing African Musicians

Live Music: Other

7:30 PM

Center for the Performing Arts audiences love banjo master Béla Fleck. Each time he has appeared at Eisenhower Auditorium—whether with the Flecktones, bassist Edgar Meyer, keyboardist Chick Corea, or as part of The Banjo Summit—Fleck has demonstrated why he is among the most talented and versatile of musicians. The Africa Project is an offspring of Fleck’s exploration of the origins of the banjo, the prototype of which was brought to America by African slaves. In on-location collaborations with musicians in Uganda, Tanzania, Senegal, Mali, South Africa, and Madagascar, Fleck found common ground with artists ranging from local villagers to international superstars. A CD and a film, both titled Throw Down Your Heart, document Fleck’s search for the earliest branches on his musical family tree. The concert tour, featuring Fleck and guest musicians from Africa, serves a generous sampling of the eclectic sounds the banjoist discovered on his journey.
