Central Pennsylvania All-Day Sacred Harp Singing
Community Events
10am - 4pm
Come experience shape-note singing, a tradition that’s been vibrant since the days when Kentucky was the frontier. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 17, singers from all over Pennsylvania and surrounding states will gather for the Central Pennsylvania All-Day Sacred Harp Singing to sing their favorites from the Sacred Harp collection of early American folk hymns and spiritual songs. This four-part music uses shaped notes—diamonds, circles, squares, and triangles—to help singers sight-read their parts. Singers arrange themselves facing inward in a hollow square, singing for each other and not an audience. The songs are loud, rhythmic, and full of interesting harmonies. Beginners are welcome, and no musical experience is necessary. A potluck lunch will be served at noon. This free event will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Centre County, 780 Waupelani Drive Extension, State College. Come for an hour or stay for the day.
