Northern Pennsylvania’s lumber country had widespread, sometimes violent opposition to the Civil War.  It became a safe haven for deserters and war opponents—so much so that the federal government sent a military force there in 1864.

Is dissent in wartime disloyal?  Must unpopular laws be obeyed?
