“Fashion, Faith, and Fantasy: How Big is Infinity”
Lectures
8:00 p.m.
Sir Roger Penrose, the Emeritus Rouse Ball Professor of Mathematics at Oxford University and the Francis R. and Helen M. Pentz Visiting Professor of Physics and Mathematics at Penn State, will present a lecture titled “Fashion, Faith and Fantasy: How Big is Infinity?” on Thursday, 4 June 2009, at 8:00 p.m. in 102 Thomas Building on the Penn State University Park Campus. The lecture is open to the public without charge.
Professor Penrose will discuss fascinating developments at the frontier of fundamental physics and cosmology. His talk also will provide an introduction for the general public to some of the most novel yet puzzling ideas in science, including some issues related to philosophy and the social sciences. His critical evaluation will demonstrate that subjective and social elements can sometimes dominate the direction of scientific developments until technology is sufficiently advanced to test scientific studies with sufficient accuracy.
