Graduate Exhibition - Special Lecture
Lectures
3:00 p.m.
Dr. Terry Engelder, professor of geosciences at Penn State and leading expert on the Marcellus shale, will present “A Brief History of the Marcellus Shale Gas: A 1940 Blowout, a 1959 Sputnik-era Science Fair, and the January 17, 2008 Penn State Press Release,” as the special guest lecturer for the 25th Annual Graduate Exhibition.
The natural gas distributed throughout the shale has the ability to greatly increase the United States’ energy resources by trillions of cubic feet. In addition to providing critical energy resources for the U.S., the shale has also created thousands of jobs for Pennsylvanians.
Dr. Engelder’s talk will chronicle the history of the Marcellus shale, beginning with the 1880 production of gas from the Marcellus shale, through the 1940 Crandall Farm gas well blowout, and concluding with his role in the recent discovery of the shale’s true natural resource potential.
