Penn State Altoona film series; Ride the High Country
Film
7 p.m.
This “end of an era” western was saved from obscurity by attentive critics who called one of the best American pictures of the year. Director Sam Peckinpah guides two legendary western stars through the final roles of their storied careers. Joel McCrea plays Steve Judd, an aging gunfighter/lawman, who hires an old sidekick named Gil Westrum (Randolph Scott) to help him transport a shipment of gold from the mining camps to a waiting bank. While McCrea’s Steve still follows his personal code, Scott’s Gil has grown tired of risking his life for pennies and has thoughts of stealing the shipment. Mariette Hartley makes a fresh-faced screen debut, and shares the screen with Peckinpah regulars Warren Oates, L.Q. Jones, and John Davis Chandler. There is no more stirring sight than Randolph Scott riding hell-bent toward a gunfight for one last time.
