Singing Onstage presents BARNUM!

Theater & Dance: Musicals

7:30 pm

Come “join the circus” as Singing Onstage Studios, State College’s premiere musical theatre training and production company, presents the Tony award winning Broadway musical BARNUM! Written by Broadway veterans Cy Coleman, Michael Steward and Mark Bramble and set in the center ring, BARNUM tells the true story of Phineas Taylor Barnum and and the acts that made him famous, including: Joice Heth, the oldest woman in the world; General Tom Thumb, only 25 inches from toe to crown; Jumbo, the largest elephant in the world; and Jenny Lind, the Sweedish Nightingale.

Performed by 22 middle and high school students as part of Singing Onstage’s summer musical theatre camps, BARNUM will have one performance only on Friday, August 7 at 7:30 pm at the Mt. Nittany Middle School auditorium. The musical begins at 7:30 pm but audience members are encouraged to arrive beginning at 6:30 pm in order to enjoy State College High School graduate Steven Moore performing magic tricks, several carnival games, and popcorn and candy. Tickets for the show can be purchased at the door. Adult admission is $15, while children and students are admitted for $10.

Singing Onstage also will feature 4 professional circus performers from Dayton, Ohio, the ExtraTerrestrial Circus Experiment, led by Adam Dipert. These performers have worked with the cast on various circus skills (juggling, stilt and tightrope walking, and unicycle riding) and will be performing in the show and will have a special fire show on the lawn of the middle school following the performance. Also featured is a 15-piece live orchestra, including local professional players such as Diane Gold-Toulsen, Smith Toulsen, Barry Kernfeld, Mark Weaver, Jeff Puhala, Andy Harbison, Jeff Smith, Mike Kearns, Jay Vonada, Eric Kernfeld, Mike Bruster, Isaac Harlan, and Cory Daniels.

Professional designers for BARNUM include Sue Polay, lights; Erik Larson, scenic; Julie Snyder, costumes; and Rodney Korte, construction and technical direction. The show is directed and conducted by Singing Onstage co-artistic director Richard Biever, with choreography by Jill A. Brighton.
