Strike Up The Band

Live Music: All

3:00 pm

The State College Area Municipal Band is playing a wide range of concert marches, March 28, Sunday at 3:00 in SCAHS South Auditorium in its Strike up the Band:  Marches - and Music for Palm Sunday.

Opening the concert with Gershwin’s “Strike Up the Band,” the band plays one of Sousa’s best marches and concert marches ranging from Tchaikovsky’s “Marche Slave” to “Washington Grays” by Grafulla—both wartime marches.

The great conductor Fennell writes, “Although Grafulla wrote many marches, he is known only by a single march, “Washington Grays.”  This one is a block buster, masterfully simple and effectively contrasting.  Its incessant flow of musical ideas is overwhelmingly convincing—a real indoor rouser from 1861.”

“March Slave” depicts the heroic yet unsuccessful try of the Slavonic people to triumph over the Turks for their independence in 1876, a struggle aided by Russian volunteers marching to assist the Serbians.

For Palm Sunday the band plays “Salvation is Created,” a fine example of the choral music of the Russian Orthodox by Tschesnokoff, and “Oh Magnum Mysterium (Oh Great Mystery)” by Lauridsen, a piece which celebrates the Christian sacraments.  These two pieces are markedly different from the marches on the program.

The concert is free, but donations are gratefully accepted at the door.
