Samuel Beckett wrote this play at a time when the smartest people on the planet had recently broken the ties that hold the atom together and the most sophisticated had unleashed its powers with disastrous results. We still live in that time.
Waiting for Godot opens on a barren road, with a leafless tree and a stone. Two ragged figures struggle with the simple tasks of survival as they await a rendezvous that they think they might be about to have.
They hope, they despair, they bicker, they make up. They hope some more. We recognize this as our own world.
Beckett called Waiting for Godot a “tragic vaudeville,” and indeed the baggy-pants-comic bits and outrageous slapstick do capture the absurd spectacle of human behavior under the silent sky.

The New York Times recently called it “the greatest play of the 20th century.”
