I’m writing this a little after 3pm from the WPSU studios in State College, so I guess this report is a bit premature: after all Remington Ryde has probably just taken the stage at the Stony Creek Campground not far from Wellsboro, PA, and The Rowan Cunningham Band will close out the festival from 5-6pm. When we got up this morning to drive from Wellsboro to State College so I could host the Folk Show, a gentle but steady rain was falling—I hope the rain let up enough to make the day comfortable for festival goers.

But even in the rain late Sat night, the music was terrific. I’d seen Joe Craven before, so I had some idea what kind of performer he his, but I was even more impressed this time. He’s an incredibly innovative and sensistive mando and fiddle player, and his range of “found” percussive items is pretty amazing, including the jawbone of a donkey, complete with rattling teeth. And in every instance, no matter how weird the item, the rhythms Joe coaxes out of them are both rock solid and tasteful. This was (Californian) Joe’s first visit to Hickory Fest, and he obviously impressed the other performers, because he shared the stage with a bunch of them, including the Harris Brothers, Rowan Cunningham, Billy Gilmore, Mosier Brothers….

Adam McMillan and I are both down here. First show I saw was in the traditional stage with David Holt and Doc Watson. I’m so happy I was able to hear Doc live, his songs are that much better when you here the story that goes behind them.
It was fun for me tooo to hear people talk the way I used to talk before moving north and the choice of words being used. Justa downhome colloquial usage that goes perfect with porch band music and picking.
There were soem acts here that were a little to rocking out for me. Like the Duhks from Manitoba CA. I love their studio work but live to much drums usage.
Wile and the West would be my surprise favorite making cowboy music hip again. and one heck of a yodeler from Montana.
Saw Peter Rowan and Tony RIce playinga set together which wasa treat…only half an hour but still worth it.
The show goes on media were invited to a special midnight jam aso I maybe headed back tonight.

Thats it from Wilkesboro, NC for now. Paul

P.S. I got so sunburned from Friday. If you go to outdoor festivals remember the sunblock!

Greg klyma is a pretty impressive singer/songwriter from Buffalo, NY (although recently relocated to Boston.) His typical setlist is a blend of poignant, eclectic and irreverent - expect clever wordplay, contagious energy, a great sense of humor and some damn fine songwriting. He’s got the heart of a rocker, the soul of a poet, and the spirit of Woody Guthrie.

I’ve seen him at Acoustic Brew, at festivals, and in a coffeehouse setting - he’s shined in every setting. He’ll be doing a house concert in Lemont tomorrow evening. In my book, a house concert setting is THE best way to see any solo performer; it’s intimate, often unplugged, and as close as you’re likely to get to hearing world class performers picking on your front porch!

I’m still not sure if I can make it or not; a large work deadline is fast approaching for me. But you should go, and I will live vicariously through your report here of how excellent the evening was, or if I get really far along tonight, I’ll see you there. Details:

A concert tour is a series of concerts by an artist or group of artists in different cities or locations. Often times concert tours are named, to differentiate different tours by the same artist and associate a specific tour with a particular album or product (for example: Michael Jackson’s Bad tour). Especially in the popular music world, such tours can become large-scale enterprises that last for several months or even years, are seen by hundreds of thousands or millions of people, and bring in millions of dollars (or the equivalent) in ticket revenues.
Different segments of longer concert tours are known as “legs”. The different legs of a tour are denoted in different ways, dependent on the artist and type of tour, but the most common means of separating legs are dates (especially if there is a long break at some point), countries and/or continents, or different opening acts. In the largest concert tours it is becoming more common for different legs to employ separate touring production crews and equipment, local to each geographical region. Concert tours are often administered on the local level by concert promoters or by performing arts presenters.

The recent warm sunny days in Central PA have got me thinking about a couple of things: planting the garden, and attending a few Folk festivals. My two favorites are Merlefest in NC, and Old Songs in NY, and if it were closer Lunenberg in Nova Scotia. But I came across a festival today that I’d never heard about that sounds terrific. The National Folk Festival. If you’re as clueless about it as I was, I’ve copied it below. And if you’ve been before and can provide some on the grounds details, I bet a bunch of folks would like to hear about it.

The History of The National Folk Festival.

First presented in St. Louis in 1934, the National Folk Festival is the oldest, longest-running and most diverse festival of traditional arts in the nation. Championed in its early years by Eleanor Roosevelt, it was the first event of national stature to put the arts of many nations, races and languages into the same event on an equal footing.

Some of the artists presented at the first festival are now legendary and the recordings and other documentation made possible by the National are precious. W.C. Handy’s first performance on a desegregated stage was at the 1938 National. It was the first national event to present the blues, Cajun music, a polka band, a Tex-Mex conjunto, a Sacred Harp ensemble, Peking opera - the list goes on and on.

Now entering its 72nd year, the National Folk Festival is still produced by the same organization that created it, the National Council for the Traditional Arts (NCTA). It is a traveling event produced in partnership with communities around the country, where the “National’s” three-year stay in each host city is intended to lay the groundwork for locally produced festivals and events that continue after the National moves on. To date, the National Folk Festival has been presented in 26 communities around the nation. Musicians and craftspeople from every state in the Union and most U.S. territories have participated in this “moveable feast of deeply traditional folk arts,” which is now attracting the largest audiences in its history.
