Hi all,

Perhaps one of the hosts, or a keen listener, can answer this.  A while back on the Folk Show (maybe 4 - 6 months) someone played a great bluegrass version of “Deportees (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos).”  I haven’t been able to find who did that version.  Any help?

Cheers.

Hey kcasey16,

I didn’t want you to think we had forgotten about the question, we’ve been digging around- but haven’t located the song yet. Thanks for your patience, we’re on the case!

Hi KCasey16, welcome!  We’re super glad you posted a question like this—- we’re all huge music geeks and love talking about what we play.

I took a look back through all of our playlist information for the past 8 months and I can’t find a record of us playing a bluegrass-y version of this tune, so I’m not sure how best to answer your question.  What I can offer instead are some suggestions, if you’re really into the song, that I think are the best, in my opinion…

My 2 favorites are:

1)  Bruce Springsteen’s / ‘Til We Outnumber ‘em.  You can find that at: http://www.amazon.com/Til-We-Outnumber-Em-Guthrie/dp/B00004SR2K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1241627083&sr=8-1.  It’s an overall great record w/ folks like Billy Bragg, Jack Elliott, Arlo, and some other surprises like Dave Pirner from Soul Asylum.  There’s something about the way Springsteen’s faux-Okie accent he sings the song w/...  it’s really affecting.

2)  Joe Ely / Los Super Seven.  You can find that one at: http://www.amazon.com/Los-Super-Seven/dp/B00000ADGG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1241627183&sr=8-3.  Los Super Seven is kind of a cool collective, a bit more electric in most spots than we’d feature on the Folk Show, but has a really cool feel to it overall—sort of what you might stereotype in your mind as borderland Tex-Mex flavored folk/rock.  Freddie Fender, Flaco J., Charlie Sexton (I think), David Hidalgo of Los Lobos, etc. are the kind of base of this loose collective.  Their album they put out a couple of years ago, Heard It On the X, featured people like Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt, Rodney Crowell, Delbert Mc., and some others.  Really cool stuff—the vocals from Ely on this particular version of Deportee are pretty affecting, too…  sometimes Ely doesn’t lock into the essence of a song, but he does on this BIG TIME!

I’m pretty bummed we can’t come up w/ the exact version you heard, but I hope maybe checking out these 2 might open up another avenue for you—- thanks for asking and jumping into the discussion!
