I only made it down for a few sets on Friday, but the Steep Canyon Rangers knocked me out yet again; the Infamous Stringdusters were just a ton of fun; and poor Del had laryngitis!  :(

Anyone else make it down/up/over/around to the show?

We got there on Friday afternoon and saw the Stringdusters and Del and we caught a bunch of the other lesser knowns.  Saw Travelin’ McCourys and the Lee Bros play together in a workshop which was neat and lasted through the freak hail storm/hurricane and saw Old Crow which was awesome.  Thanks for the tickets!

I made it down for Sunday…did some interviewing about the storm that rocked the foundations of Cumberland, Maryland and put a stymie on the festival on Saturday night

....found from several people that when Sam Bush came on stage, the sky was cloudy…but when he sang “Rain”, the sky opened up, and then the hail.  Started with hail the size of dimes and worked it’s way up to golf ball size…people ran for cover, and all the rest of the music went inside…they did some stuff outside late that night,

—-but they said all the artists went inside and jammed until the wee hours of the morning to a very slight crowd.  Many people left when the storm came.  Saw many sleeping bags and clothing and tent stuff hanging up to dry.

I’ve got some good pics that I’ll send in.  Some of a gentleman and his daughter dancing in the profound mud right in front of the stage while Crooked Still played.

Got a good pic of the wreckage of the vendors booths from the storm…and some mighty good ones of some of the artists.

What a wonderful experience.  Thanks!

Hello

I remember being in the Station Inn when Dierks was playing there for tips back before he became “famous”. He has a deep appreciation of bluegrass music and plays a mighty fine tune that you might not hear on albums.

Being a bluegrass fan, researcher, etc, I would recommend the Del McCoury Band, the Grascals, and Rhonda Vincent to start off your listening pleasure. However, don’t forget to add the beginnings of bluegrass, Bill Monroe, add in a little bit of Ralph Stanley, and a dash of Flatt & Scruggs. I must not forget JD Crowe as his bluegrass festival is next weekend just down the road from me.

Cherryholmes are a good “current” band that are from out west. The oldest daughter has some good vocals on several tracks on their albums. The family is somewhat new to bluegrass as they all learned to play bluegrass instruments just a few years ago.
