Sunday Pie is one of those albums I was reluctant to take out of my CD player and move over to the WPSU broadcast library. But it’s there now, and listeners will be hearing cuts from it in the coming weeks. I’m a sucker for distinctive and slightly primitive female vocals (Hazel Dickens and Iris Dement come to mind), and Wurst’s voice really perks up my ears. The songs on this CD range from the a traditional a cappella “Bright Morning Stars” to the upbeat original “Patsy Montana,” with a bit of yodelling. My favorites are those that draw on family themes, including the upbeat, sweet song about family and work values (Grandpa) and “Uncle Raymond,” that includes a snippet of the title character’s favorite song, “Gospel Ship” I almost forgot “Big Papa,” which starts off with a few seconds of pig noises, and describes quite a “down home” domestic sceneāfun stuff.” Oh, and there’s the hidden portion of the last track, where Wurst intersperses her grandpa’s reminiscences with some old-time fiddling. There’s more, but you’ll have to listen to the Folk Show or look up the CD on the web!
