Folk and acoustic singer songwriters? “Singers” is a pretty broad term. Most people who fall under the description acoustic singer songwriter start by playing open mic nights, coffee houses for tips, and probably most importantly, opening acts for larger name folkies. They play as often as they can, often for very little money, for the opportunity to improve their craft, build their audience, and for the experience. They try to absorb as much as they can from the people who have done this for years; they network with like-minded people as often as possible. The more you’re immersed in it, the more you play, the better you get… but that’s no guarantee of success, by any means. Whatever that even means in the folk realm…  as Bill Morrissey once sang, “you’ve got motels and planes, not couches and Fords…”
