I’m sitting here listening to all sorts of good stuff, and find myself as usual finding the bagpipes and Uileean pipes beautiful. I’m curious if given a choice what most listeners would rather hear early in the morning. None is not an answer since I’m programming there will be at least one (of each).

Let me know.

I love the bagpipes and am not sure what the Uileean pipes sound like. Play both so we can compare! I look forward to listening on Saturday.

ok fans, its 5:30 something, looks like we’ll hear a cut from KILA, the Irish celtic traditional/avant gard musicians. I saw them at a show in Ballyshannon, Ireland two years ago. Excellent piping, This is the song with the Uileean pipes. The next will be bagpipes from Mike Katz. Mike is an American but you would swear after hearing him that he was Scottish. He has played with the Battleband so you know he’s good.
Stay tuned and in a bit the show starts or it can be listened in the archival section of the Folk SHow on the Web.

My preference is definitely towards Uileean, since they are used in traditional Irish music which can be mellow or wild and crazy.  Bag pipes remind me more of Scottish marches - which I also like, but not at 6 in the morning!

I didn’t want to be a person causing “researcher bias” but I like the Uileean pipes too for the reasons you mentioned, especially at 6 in the morning. I do like bag pipes when played well though and Mike Katz can play them well! If you haven’t heard this CD from KILA, they are an all Irish band. They toured in Japan and met a Japanese musician named Oki from a northern islands. The two collaborated on the CD called Kila/Oki. I really like it and have played more than one of their songs from the CD on the radio. Kila, after I met them, sends their music to me for the Folk Show so it might be hard to get,a copy even with the Internet over here.
