I’ve yet to see Jonathon Byrd in concert, and although I’ve heard past recordings from him, nothing has really caught my ear until this latest one: Cackalack. Byrd’s voice ranges from smooth and pretty on Scuppernong to gritty on the bluegrassy Chickenwire. His falsetto on New Moon Rise reminds me of John Hartford, and I hear echoes of John Prine on Dungarees Overalls. And backing him up through the album are members of The Creaking Tree String Band: John Showman, Andrew Collins, Brian Kobayakawa, and on piano and vocals, Treasa Lavasseur. Ken Whitley added a bit of resonator guitar, and recorded the session (in Toronto). The recording happened in one six-hour session, “no headphones, no listenbacks, no separation, no overdubs.” You’ll be hearing cuts from this CD starting this weekend, and it should be available soon on itunes, etc. (and his own website, I would think!
