Good morning, here is a link to a story about the death of renowned guitarist Bert Jansch. He was a founding member of Pentangle who along with Jacqui McShee, John Renbourn and others were a huge influence on British folk and rock music back in the day.

I’ll play something of Bert’s this Saturday. Does anyone know how “Jansch” is pronounced?

Tom Beebee asks “How do you pronounce Bert’s last name?

Yan-sch ?

Jessica replies: Well, take it for what it’s worth, but Wikipedia explains the pronunciation this way:

Herbert Jansch was born at Stobhill Hospital, Glasgow in 1943, the descendant of a family originally from Hamburg, who settled in Britain during the Victorian era.[2] The family name is pronounced /ˈjænʃ/ “yansh” by almost everyone except Jansch himself. He and some close members of his family pronounce it /ˈdʒænʃ/ “jansh”.[3]

and Uncle Bob follows up:

I concur, I have always heard it pronounced “Jan-shh”, with a hard J,  not to be confused with Tom Jans, Mimi Farina’s buddy after Richard died. That of course does not make my interpretation of pronunciation correct!

Jim Colbert adds his own unique central PA perspective:

They pronounce it with a hard “J” as a surname in Johnstown, but… well, all I’m gonna say is, that is Johnstown and all disclaimers apply. (Those of us who grew up there just shake our heads in acknowledgment.)
