It’s time to get the garden primed to produce the produce we’ve been craving since the hard frosts finally killed the hardiest of our vegetables,  and time to fill up the penny jar at WPSU with funds to keep us going till fall, so I’ll be thinking of those two things as I put together music for the folk show this weekend.

During fundraising I keep the playlist mostly light and energetic,  with a few tongue-in-cheek songs to make it clear that we don’t take ourselves all that seriously,  even as we are earnestly asking for listeners to part with some serious cash to keep WPSU and the Folk Show in good shape financially.  I’ve played Spider John Koerner’s “Everybody’s goin’ for the Money”  over the years,  probably too many times.  We just added a re- release of Davey Graham’s instrumental version of “The Hag with the Money.” Probably a good thing it doesn’t have words!

One I know I want to play is “I’ve Endured,”  by Ola Belle Reed.  I’d never hear of her before, but came across 3 LP’s of hers from the 1970’s.  Really powerful songs,  and I’ll post more in the Artists and CDs thread.

Pass on any suggestions for this weekend,  and I’ll post more about what I might play in the next couple of days.

Mel,

Ola Belle Reed came from the mountains of North Carolina.  She played the banjo, played mountain music and wrote over 200 songs including “High On A Mountain.”  If I’m not mistaken, I think she wrote “John Hardy” too. Many of her songs have been recorded by others.  She also lived in and performed around Baltimore for a number of years during the depression era.

Olla Belle Reed’s “High on a Mountain” is very haunting…had the fortune to play her on Saturday.

Will look up your suggestions…

Thanks…Jennifer
