What a great day to host the Folk Show, sandwiched between May Day and Pete Seeger’s 90th birthday on May 3rd!
Plus Cinco de Mayo coming up next week, so that brings Mexican music to mind and the coming of SUMMER to celebrate, since April showers have indeed brought May flowers.
On top of all those topics to program around, fellow Folk Show host Paul Rutter pointed out that May 2 is Derby Day, so I’m thinking horse songs. I’ll be checking the thread started by host Jim Colbert for some ideas for that, though Tennessee Stud on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s Will The Circle Be Unbroken comes immediately to mind.
Right now, my playlist includes songs from new releases by Tom Rush (first studio album since the 1970s) and by Bela Fleck (a great new CD featuring collaborations with African musicians), along with music by Old Crow Medicine Show, Ed Miller, Gillian Welch, and, of course, Pete Seeger.
Also: a cut from a CD of Vance Gilbert live at the Kerrville Folk Show in 2007. I was fortunate enough to be there, but even a live recording can’t really capture him. He is a fantastic performer and entertainer. Go to his concert Saturday night at the WPSU studios! You’ll be glad you did!
Looking forward to sharing the music, Laurel
