On Sunday, Pete Seeger will be 90 and thousands of people are planning to celebrate with him.

The birthday man celebrate his big day at a New York City concert, headlined by Bruce Springsteen and Dave Matthews, to benefit one of Seeger’s favorite environmental groups, Clearwater.  (tickets appear to still be available…)

Around the world there will be celebration gatherings on the theme of “For Pete’s Sake, Sing!”

Here’s a nice link to a page with Seeger encouraging folks to sing along with him: http://www.folkways.si.edu/learn_discover/sing_a_long_pete.aspx.

Favorite Pete Seeger songs, y’all?  Or memories of when you first heard him sing?  As the child of folkies, I can’t even remember my first time!

Seeing him perform a set for children at Merlefest in ‘06…  classic.  I have great pix of it…  I’ll dig ‘em up and post ‘em sometime this weekend.  Adam

Some critics would say that we are giving praise to this one time communist…. what does the folk community say about that?

I would say communism was never given a real chance to succeed because its leaders kept taking excess value created and putting it towards nuclear armaments and building up the military instead of reinvesting in workers education. Capitalism is not much better in the excess amounts of money given to owners of large multi-national businesses. Can you imagine what America could be if we had a system more like Sweden?

As for me I’ll repeat my mantra, education not weapons. Whatever the system of government, education not weapons.

I love Pete by the way. When I play waste deep in the big muddy I get favorable calls.

Sorry for my tardiness, didn’t join in time to contibute prior to his 90th, but I managed to find a recording of Pete Seeger and Big Bill Bronzy featuring live on a Studs Terkel 1950s radio show.
Have to admit that prior to listening to this Big Bill’s blues were more up my street than Pete’s folk music.
However, the show enlightened and changed my perception.
I have never enjoyed a radio show more.
Looking forward to wishing Pete many more happy returns.
