Five local food items for your Memorial Day Weekend cookout table

Asparagus is in season at the Altoona Farmers Market, and other markets, and goes great on the grill.

Memorial Day is the kickoff for summer, and many of us will be hosting or attending cookouts. Our local food bounty deserves a place at your cookout table, and here’s five items you can find at our regional Friday and Saturday farmers markets. Seek them out, and support your local food community.

- Byler Goat Dairy goat cheese, North Atherton Farmers Market: Chèvre cheese might not be the first choice for many to top a burger but it’s definitely worth a try. The creamy yet earthy flavor of the cheese goes well with burgers, and Byler’s version is fantastic.

-Jade Family Farm salad greens, North Atherton Farmers Market: Make sure your family and friends get their nutritious greens by serving up a tasty salad made with fresh, local greens from Jade Family Farm. They offer up a tasty variety of greens from the bite of arugula to the subtle sweetness of baby lettuce.

- Sandwich bread from Gemelli Bakers, State College Friday Farmers Market: Want to punch up your sandwich game for your cookout guests? Gemelli Bakers bakes some interesting varieties of bread that will go well with whatever mad creation you can come up with to fill it. Their olive bread is remarkable, but you can’t go wrong with any of their varieties.

- Pasta from Fasta & Ravioli at the State College Friday Farmers Market: Pasta salad is a staple of the cookout table. Instead of supermarket pasta, why not try one of Fasta’s flavored pastas? The roasted red pepper fusilli is a winner for cold pasta salads.

- Fresh asparagus, Altoona Farmers Market: Asparagus is in season at the Altoona Farmers Market, and while most people think of steamed as the way to prepare it, it goes well on the grill. Simply brush it with olive oil, and grill for a few minutes on each side. Delicious with just sea salt.
