12 Degrees: A Wellness Podcast

Mitochondria, Mood Lighting, and Mr. Winnie: The Environmental Degree

Environmental wellness emphasizes the impact of surroundings on well-being. This includes creating safe, clean, and sustainable spaces at home, work, and in the community.

Wellness isn’t just about what’s going on inside you—it’s also about what’s around you. In this episode of 12 Degrees, Lindsey, Christina, and Deshna explore the environmental degree of wellness, from air quality and cozy décor to third spaces and time in nature. Whether you’re a plant-murdering maximalist or a master of organized chaos, you’ll find practical tips, science-backed insights, and a few unexpected laughs along the way.

Real-Life Strategies for Environmental Wellness:

  • Decorate for Well-Being – Use color, lighting, and meaningful objects (like art or mementos) to create spaces that reflect your personality and support calm, focus, or joy.
  • Declutter with Intention – Try the “12-12-12” or “3-3-3” method: donate, toss, and organize a set number of items. Start small to reduce overwhelm and build momentum.
  • Tend to Air Quality – Open windows for fresh air, clean filters monthly, and use non-toxic cleaners. Even 5 minutes of ventilation can lower indoor pollutants.
  • Upgrade Your Cozy – Switch to beeswax, soy, or coconut candles to reduce airborne toxins—or opt for essential oils and battery-powered lights for a safer vibe.
  • Let Nature In – Add houseplants (or nature art, if you’re a known plant killer), open curtains, or play water sounds—small nature cues can soothe the nervous system.
  • Get Outside in Micro-Moments – Outdoor wellness doesn’t require a hike—eat lunch outside, open a window, or stand barefoot in the grass (aka “earthing”).
  • Practice Forest Bathing or Nature Journaling – Slow down outdoors. Engage your senses or jot notes/sketch what you see. Research links both to lower stress and improved mood.
  • Create Third Spaces (Bonus Points if They’re Outdoors!) – Seek or support community gathering spots—like porches, parks, libraries, or coffee shops—that foster casual connection and well-being.
  • Support Wildlife and Planet Health – Join clean-ups, pick up litter as a game, or participate in efforts like the Great Backyard Bird Count to boost eco and emotional wellness.
  • Check Your Emotional Environment – A calm space isn’t just about lighting and rugs. Evaluate how safe, supported, and respected you feel at home and in your community.
