There’s a building in Cooperstown where the country quietly keeps a version of its own memory. The Baseball Hall of Fame is full of the things you’d expect — the jerseys, the bats, the scuffed and darkened baseballs — but that’s just the part of the story. When the country went to war, the game went with it: Jewish ballplayers who traded the batter’s box for the front lines in World War II, and, years earlier, an American squad that stood on a diamond inside a Berlin stadium in 1936 while Hitler watched from the stands — the national pastime dropped into the middle of the century’s darkest story.
